Manganese Greensand is a filtration medium made from glauconite greensand, designed to remove iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide from water through oxidation and filtration processes.
Dissolved iron and manganese in water are oxidized and precipitated upon contact with higher manganese oxides on the surface of the filtration media granules. Hydrogen sulfide is oxidized, forming insoluble sulfur deposits. The resulting precipitates are retained in the filter bed and subsequently removed during backwashing.
When the oxidation capacity of the Manganese Greensand filter bed is exhausted, the media must be regenerated using a weak potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) solution to restore its oxidation capacity.
For normal regeneration, 1½–2 ounces of potassium permanganate in solution per cubic foot of Manganese Greensand media is sufficient.
Thorough backwashing and regeneration are required before the filtration media is put into service and before its oxidation capacity is completely exhausted.
Continuing to use the filtration media after its oxidation capacity has been exhausted reduces its service life and may cause staining from the treated water.
